After a long period of hospitalization in 1992-93, Ed connected with a local drop-in center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he began his recovery. He helped to organize a Print Shop at the center and started advocating for members of the center. He became Executive Director of the Center in 2000. While there he was instrumental in organizing a program to curtail incarceration of the Mentally Ill, working with the Mental Health Court in providing temporary housing for those in the jail system. His work led him to work with the task force in Broward County in training Police Officers for a Crisis Intervention Team with the Fort Lauderdale Police. This program has expanded throughout the county to include many local police departments and the Broward County Sherriff’s Office. He was a member of the Broward County Mental Health Force under the direction of Circuit Judge Mark Speiser and a member of the Broward Consumer Oversight Committee.
He is now retired and heads up Altered States of the Arts, Inc. a national network of artists with a psychiatric history. Altered States conducts an Arts Experience each year at the Alternatives Conference and displays consumer/survivor art on its website from artists around the world. It additionally has established an annual recognition of outstanding consumer artists who have contributed to the arts community in their home communities, presenting an individual with the “Howie the Harp” award annually at the Alternatives conference.
